As a business consultant, I believe clarity drives success. My mission is to help leaders achieve clarity in every facet of their work.
Recently, I attended a spin class—a 45-minute grind where you pedal furiously but go nowhere. (Honestly, if you can bike outdoors safely, it’s far more enjoyable and effective.) Over the years, I’ve had great and not-so-great spin instructors. In my latest class, around the 30-minute mark, after intense seated sprints and standing climbs, the instructor promised the toughest part was done, and we’d shift to “flat road, some speed” for a cooldown. But minutes later, she had us grinding again, with no clear sense of how long each effort would last. You just kept going until she said stop. Sure, I controlled my own effort, but the lack of clarity left me holding back.
Compare that to a previous class. That instructor laid it all out: each of the three rows of cyclists would push hard for 30 seconds, recover for 60 seconds, and repeat for 12 rounds. She synced our timers so we knew exactly when transitions would happen. With that clear roadmap, I could pace myself, push my limits, and finish knowing I’d nailed the workout.
Clarity is empowering. Whether it’s a spin class, a tough hike, or a yearlong business project, knowing what’s ahead lets you allocate effort, manage resources, and eliminate guesswork.
In my work with clients, I focus on bringing this same clarity to their businesses by:
- Defining clear goals, so everyone understands the target.
- Documenting tasks thoroughly, ensuring they’re clear, repeatable, and delegable to anyone with the right skills.
- Setting clear expectations, with regular feedback from all levels—superiors, peers, and team members—so employees feel valued and motivated.
- Building a clear, positive culture, where shared values break down barriers and foster collaboration.
When you clarify what your business does, its goals, operations, and how it serves employees, customers, and vendors, success follows naturally. The best way to achieve this clarity? Bring in an outside perspective—a skilled consultant who can see what you might miss.
